The Makoa Farm

This is a one stop area where you can hike, swim and enjoy you day other than the Kilimanjaro yet in the same area with the mountain.

The Makoa farm is located in the Village of Machame on the southern slopes of the Kilimanjaro Mountain.

The farm was founded in the year 1901. The Makoa farm is located at an altitude of about 1,070 meters above sea level. The farm covers an area of about 143 hectares.

Many of the colonial-era structures are still present on the farm.

Laszlo and Elisabeth, a German-Hungarian couple who work as veterinarians, have been in charge of this farm since 1999.

This farm might serve as a starting point for exploring the area around Kilimanjaro Mountain’s southern base. There are four opulent cottages on the site with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

You will have the opportunity to engage with some of the wild animals that the hosts, a group of veterinarians, will be treating.

Starting at around 10 am, anyone interested in hiking from this location to the Makoa River can start the adventure.

The hike is so rewarding that it will give you views of both the Kilimanjaro Mountain and the Meru Mountain. You will enjoy a variety of tree species, butter flies and over 100 bird species.

There is a small water fall and a bat cave on the hike that you can enjoy. There also a lot of primates that will be playing in the canopy.

The black and white colubus monkeys are some of the species you will meet.

You will arrive at the Makoa River in around two hours. You will arrive here somewhere in the middle of the day, have some time to rest, and then depart again.

Basically, you may swim, have a picnic, or just relax and take in the scenery here.
