Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Londorossi gate and hike to Mti Mkubwa (2,250 – 2,780m)
Your safari driver will pick you from your hotel and drive you to Londorossi gate where you will do all the formalities from and briefing thereafter, you will continue to the starting point and off into the rainforest you go. Look out for some monkeys swinging in the trees.
In about 2 hours or so, you will reach Mti Mkubwa camp where you will spend your first night on Kilimanjaro Mountain.
Hiking time: 2-3 hours
Day 2: Hike from Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 camp (2,780 – 3,500m)
Today’s climb takes you out of the green forest into the moorland continuing Eastwards into the Shira plateau with stunning views of the Shira Cathedral, Mount Meru and Kibo.
Descend over Shira ridge to reach your camp for tonight, the Shira camp 1.
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Day 3: Hike from Shira 1 camp to Shira camp 2 (3,500 – 3,900m)
The landscape will become more barren at the increase in elevation on this day. After your breakfast, you head out on a less tiring day crossing the Shira ridge which offers great views of the scenic rift valley. Upon arrival at Shira camp 2, you will have your lunch and spend the rest of the day at leisure or take a walk around to check out your surroundings.

Day 4: Acclimatization Day via Lava Tower: Hike from Shira camp 2 to Barranco camp (3,900 – 3,960m)
Climb high and sleep low to give a chance to your body to acclimatize and adapt to the changing altitudes on Kilimanjaro. This gives you high chances of summiting to Uhuru peak. Some steep up hill climbs as you hike to the Lava tower, take a break here and have lunch as you enjoy the views. Later descend into the Barranco valley up to the Barranco camp where you will spend the night.
Hiking time: 6-7 hours
Day 5: Hike from Barranco camp to Karanga camp (3,960 – 4,035m)
Enjoy a late start today, wake up and enjoy the polite morning sun as you have your breakfast. Today, you will encounter the famous Barranco wall where you will have to use your hands at some points on the climb. It is a thrilling climb that is slightly challenging. With clear weather conditions, you will yet again enjoy great views of the glaciers of Kibo. Continue to Karanga camp for dinner and an overnight.

Day 6: Hike from Karanga camp to Barafu camp (4,035 – 4,640m)
Today you will step into a rugged terrain, the alpine desert zone as you climb to Barafu camp. Spectacular views of the Mawenzi peak from Barafu camp, your final base camp before your final summit attempt. Prepare your warm clothing and equipment for summit day before you retire early to bed for a deserved rest.
Hiking time: 3-4 hours
Day 7: Summit Day; Hike from Barafu camp to Uhuru peak-summit (4,640 – 5,895m), Descend from Uhuru peak to Mweka camp (5,895 – 3,080m)
Final summit attempt. A strenuous ascent that requires you to tap into your mental stamina and physical capabilities to push through fatigue and the harsh cold conditions for the end reward is worth it, standing on the top of Kilimanjaro Mountain. On your ascent, take a short rest at Stella point before you continue to Uhuru peak by sunrise. With clear weather, you will watch the golden sunrise above the clouds as you savor the great accomplishment. After some good minutes at the top, you will start your descent to Mweka camp via Barafu camp for a short rest and lunch. Overnight at Mweka camp.
Hiking time: 5-7 hours (ascent time) 3-4 hours (descend time)
Day 8: Descend from Mweka camp to Mweka gate (3,068 – 1,630m)
Your final day on the mountain. Passing through the rainforest one more time, you will descend to Mweka gate, collect your summit certificates and your tour driver will drive you to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha. Freshen up and continue with the summit celebrations. You just conquered the largest free-standing mountain in the world.
