The Balletto Glacier like most of the glacier is on the Kibo peak which is the highest of the Kilimanjaro and is located on the southern slopes of this peak.
This glacier is one of the few that is still intact on the mountain. At an elevation of between 5,000 and 5,400 meters above sea level, this glacier is situated.
With a base of roughly 1200 meters, this glacier is situated atop a large rock known as the “Western Breach Wall” or the “Kissing Rock.”
A few meters below the Diamond glaciers is where it is.
The two glaciers are connected by a short, roughly 90-meter-long rock rift.
There is a local tale that an Italian Balletto discovered the Machame route and mapped it using his dog.
Balletto is said to have given his dog a piece of steak every time he felt like it while it was trying to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
There were many obstacles on Kilimanjaro, and it’s thought that dogs could get over them more easily than people could.
Then, based on how easily the dog found the meat he threw, he would plot his course.
Though more akin to myth, this is quite fascinating. It is impossible to ascribe anything to this path, which has proven to be the most effective one on Kilimanjaro.
As a result, Balleto was honored with the name of the large glacier in recognition of his contribution in locating the roué that leads to it.
By 1920, neither the Balletto nor the Diamond glaciers above it had names. because they were still somewhat separated from the southern ice field.
Reinhold Messner attempted to hike Kilimanjaro by a straight ascent later in 1978. He established the glaciers’ existence. as a distinct block for the southern ice field and one another.
The Southern ice field split apart, becoming the Balleto and Diamond glaciers. because of the block’s considerable melting.
Global warming has caused a great deal of breakaway in recent times. It is thought that if its impact is not managed. In the next five to ten years, the glaciers might disappear entirely.
