Explore Lava Tower on Mount Kilimanjaro – History & Hiking Routes

This lava tower is almost 150 thousand years old. Volcanic activity, the same process that created Kilimanjaro, also created this tower.

Lava was poured from a vent, and when it solidified, it blocked the vent and took on the shape of a tower.

When an eruption happens, the quantity of volcanic activity is controlled by these structures, which act as plugs on active volcanoes.

The lava tower has not been used, and this volcano has lain dormant for a very long period.

The tower rises to a height of about 90 meters. The tower climb was originally a part of the Kilimanjaro experience for hikers, but it was discontinued due to safety concerns.

A 360-degree panorama of the area would be revealed to those who ascended the tower.

Which Route takes you to the lava Tower?

You will take either the Shira, Lemosho, Northern Circuit and Machame routes. All these routes head to the Uhuru peak of the Kilimanjaro.

The best route however is the western route but if you have made your research you know how hazardous this trail is. The tower has an accommodation camp and you can overnight here.
