The Credner Glacier is located on the Kibo peak on the north western side of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. It is also one of the largest glaciers on this mountain.
The glacier is still in the ice form up to now and is present at the top the Kilimanjaro. Between the mark of 5,500 and 5,800 meters above sea level is where you will find these glaciers.
According to study, the glaciers are melting swiftly, and if stringent action is not made to regulate the factors affecting them, it is predicted that the glaciers may disappear within the next ten years.
According to reports, the Credner Glacier has shrunk by half over the past ten years, and if current trends continue, there won’t be nearly as many of them in the next five years.
The Credner Glacier is one of the feeders of the Drygalski Glacier, the Uhlig glacier, Penck glaciers and the Great and Little glaciers.
Herman Credner
German scientist Carl Hermann Georg Credner was the son of German geologist Carl Friedrich Heinrich Credner. He was honored with the name Credner Glaciers.
The rope with two pistons was tightened following the 2009 survey conducted by local guide Dismas Marika and Thomas Laemmle, who had taken the most difficult way to reach this glacier.
It took more than 7 hours to reach the tongue of this glacier. Before this it took a long time as they climbed the 4600 meter high lava tower.
The next day, they descended and used the Marangu path to reach the top; this route was formally designated the “Thomas Glacier Route” in remembrance of its founder.
What is the largest Glacier in Africa?
Not only is the Credner Glacier the biggest in Africa, but it’s also the largest on Kilimanjaro. When compared to the Furtwangler Glacier, it is merely second.
Why are there Glaciers in Africa?
As the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro is well-regarded among the peaks in the work.
Africa is home to numerous additional high peaks, such as Mountain Kenya and the Ruwenzori.
The tropical climate in this area supports the snow on top of the mountains. Although due to the recent global warming, this is beginning to change.
