Explore the Little Penck Glacier on Mount Kilimanjaro

The Little Penck glacier is also located on the Kilimanjaro in the Kilimanjaro National Park. It’s located on the western slopes of the Kilimanjaro Mountain.

Before it broke off in 1992, the glacier stretched to the Northern Ice Field. Close to the glacier’s historical terminal end from 1912, a sizable yet immobile ice mass still exists.

The Uhlig glaciers, which formerly fronted the Little Pennick Glaciers to the north and south, have disappeared along with the glacier.

What is the largest Glacier in Africa?

The Credner Glacier is not only the largest glacier on the Kilimanjaro but also in Africa. It is only second or compared to the Furtwangler Glacier.

Global warming and the Kilimanjaro glaciers

A large number of glaciers have vanished recently, particularly those in the northern ice field sector. A decade ago, about 80% of the glaciers’ original size was disappeared.

The amount of snow which is the reason the glaciers form has also reduced from the 1912 when studies on this mountain became formal.

It is believed that if the glaciers melt at the same rate, we shall have none of them at the summit of the Kilimanjaro by 2030

African Glaciers Melting

There has been a general decrease in the number and size of glacier in Africa and this has been attributed to the effects of global warming and the melting of these glaciers has also cause a lot of flooding especially in Eastern Africa.

How Many Glaciers are in Africa?

Only three nations in Africa contain glaciers, which makes them unusual as they shouldn’t be found in the equatorial zone.

There are glaciers on the Ruwenzori, Kilimanjaro, and Kenya mountains, which are located in Tanzania, Kenya, and Tanzania, respectively.
