The shortest and most difficult route up the Kilimanjaro summit. Umbwe route is no route for the non-experienced climbers. It is a very challenging route because of its steep ascent and is highly recommended to skilled and experienced mountain climbers. It is no walk in the park, but for experienced and confident climber, it is an adventurous trail to take you to the top.
Despite its challenging nature, Umbwe route is known for its scenically beautiful views. It is one of the most beautiful routes on the climb to the Kilimanjaro summit. So, as you hold onto the tree roots as you climb, don’t forget to check out the beauty around you and the forest birds.
It has low summit success rates and is one of the less crowded routes. Like most of the routes (with exemption of the Marangu route), Umbwe also offers camping facilities, fully catered.
The distance of this route is 53 km and it takes you through an unspoiled rain-forest, rocky outcrops, alpine desert and the snowy cold summit. The ascent starts from Umbwe gate in the South and descends via the Mweka route to Mweka gate in the South.

- Day 1: Umbwe gate to Umbwe camp (1,600 – 2,940m)
- Day 2: Umbwe camp to Barranco camp (2,940 – 3,976m)
- Day 3: Barranco camp to Karanga camp (3,976 – 3,995m)
- Day 4: Karanga camp to Barafu camp (3,995 – 4,673m)
- Day 5: Barafu camp to Uhuru peak-summit (4,673 – 5,895m), Uhuru peak to Mweka camp (5,895 – 3,068m)
- Day 6: Mweka camp to Mweka gate (3,068 – 1,640m)
