The Kikuletwa hot springs which are also known as the Chemka hot springs are located between Moshi and Arusha. It’s about 2 hours drive from Arusha town and a little over an hour from the town of Moshi.
For those willing to take public transportation, you will add a little more time since the buses will keep stopping from time to time. There are however many options of transportation depending of the adventure you are looking for.
You can take a motorcycle; there are tricycles (Tuk tuk). You can actually plan a day drip to these springs before or after your Kilimanjaro hiking expedition.
If you are in a group, its best that you book a private transportation car from Arusha or Moshi. It may be a little expensive but it will be more convenient and comfortable.
The fact that the route to the hot springs isn’t direct, you may need to take about two of three buses to get there which may be inconveniencing and time consuming.
The earlier you get here, the more the time you will have to explore the hot springs.
Booking a tour to Chemka Hot Springs (Kikuletwa Hot Springs)
It’s beat that since this a very small attraction that you book through a tour operator since the route may be confusing. You can still find the place but it may take you a long time to get there.
But the tour company will have you with a guide that is welled versed with the area and you will use less time traveling and more time adventuring.
If you have does not the Kilimanjaro hike first, you can talk to the local guides and book a cheaper one to get you there. This may be cheaper as well.
A guide will come with advantages of other things like coffee plantation tours, waterfalls and the hot springs. This will all depend on your budget.
A beach towel, as well as a snorkel and mask, made a huge difference to our experience at the hot springs. Lots of tourists came and swam but didn’t have a mask.
As you can see, there’s quite a lot they missed. Even if your tour doesn’t include a mask, make sure you rent one at the hot springs to see the incredible underwater world.
Most tours with operators will come with meals, comfortable cars, WiFi on the go and air conditioning. Since the area can be a little humid. The public transport and a free lance guide may not have any of these.
