Altitude & Geology of Mount Kilimanjaro – Facts & Insights

The existence of the Tarakia and Namwai Rivers are two lesser-known marvels that are overshadowed by the fact that Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest mountain.

The mountain has very many rodents and the most notable one being the Four-Striped Mouse. Other notable wildlife is the African bush Elephants, grey duikers, blue monkeys and the Black and white colubus monkeys.

The Kilimanjaro Mountain stands at an elevation of about 5,890 meters above sea level.

The Geology of the Kilimanjaro

Being the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro has basically an intriguing geology trait.

The mountain is generally believed to have been formed over 750,000 years ago. The mountain is made up of three cones namely: Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira.

The three peaks have basically been affected by other processes. Like erosion that led to the Shira peak falling to form a plateau. The Mawenzi was eroded and the rocks exposed.
