The Gateway to the northern tourism circuit of Tanzania is Arusha. The city is home to two airports; The Kilimanjaro International airport and Arusha Municipal or Domestic Airport.

Arusha Airport History
This domestic airport was built by Colonel Grey in the year 1956. The colonel was a large scale farmer of coffee and sorghum in the Kilimanjaro area.
At the time Tanzania was under the British rule. When Tanzania go its independence in 1961, the airport was handed over. It was taken on by the new government of Tanzania. At the time, the airport was run by the East African Airways. It was an aviation branch of the East African Community.
When the East African community collapsed in the 1970s, the airport was run by the agricultural department of Tanzania since this airport was mostly used to transport agricultural products from this area.
When later the Tanzania Airports Authority was created, the airport was handed over to this authority ever since. According to the ICAO standards, Annex 14, Aerodrome design manual, Arusha Airport is classified as a code 3C airport.
The Arusha domestic airport has total run way area of about 1860 meters in length and 30 meters wide and an orientation of 09 and 27.
Arusha Airport has five taxiways that is Taxiway A, B, C, D and P which is the Parallel taxiway of 500m length and a width of 7.5, joining the remote apron runway 09 and taxiway A. Arusha Airport has two main aprons, including;
Main Apron area which has an area of 15000 square meters, whose capacity can park Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 at once.
Remote apron with a facility of 8925 square meters with a capacity of parking air-crafts with less than 12 tonnes.
