The Barranco camp is found at the base of the Barranco wall of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. This camp houses hiker of the Kilimanjaro that use the routes of Umbwe, Shira,Lemosho and Machame.
It’s quite a busy route considering that it houses trekkers from four trails. The camp can be used while ascending and descending. Most routes however prefer to use the camp wile ascending and descend using a different route.
Hikers on the Barranco camp will have to carry their own tents that they can pitch at the well organized camp site. There are no huts and cabins here.
Porters will help you carry this camping equipment. There is only one permanent structure here which is the ranger’s hut which also doubles as the administration office.
There are also toilets on this camp which are in the main building here.
Location
The Camp is located on the southern side of the Kilimanjaro just at the Barranco wall. The camp is partly in the Moorland vegetation of the Kilimanjaro and the Alpine vegetation.
This makes the camp a very good place for acclimatization. Since the camp has a little bit of the Moorland and Alpine.. The alpine vegetation being the next vegetation zone and it has all its challenges; it would be good that this camp helps you familiarize with the next zone conditions.
The Camp is more inclined to the Moorland vegetation zone and therefore it receives enough rainfall.
There is enough plant and animal life here and you should enjoy it before you move to the alpine where the humidity will be high and you will not have plant and animal life and the oxygen levels will also drop.
The camp will be covered form the heavy winds on the mountain since it’s almost on the Karanga valley.
The Barranco valley is also on the east as it also acts as a cover for this camp again the strong mountain winds. The Kibo cone is on the northern side to give more extra cover.
You will be moving to the Karanga hut camp as your next accommodation from the Barranco hut camp.
