Horombo Hut & Campsite – Key Stop on Kilimanjaro’s Marangu Route

The Horombo Hut & Campsite lies along the Marangu trail as you hike to the Kilimanajaro Mountain. The Camp has wooden cabins and an area where you can pitch you own tent.

This camp is the second from the base of the Kilimanjaro. This camp can be used by both those ascending and descending the Kilimanjaro. Those descending via the Rongai route.

The biggest advantage of this camp is that it has enough water drawn from the streams nearby. There are a lot of water issues on the camps on the Kilimanjaro and camps with water are an advantage.

This camp is among the few camps on the Kilimanjaro that has bathrooms with shower.

The camp has wooden cabins and huts that can house about 6 to 8 people. The cabins are not self contained and you will have to use the pit latrines outside. This camp is big enough and can accommodate about 120 hikers in one night.

Campsite Facilities

The camp has a ranger’s office where you will register when you arrive and as you leave. There is a kitchen and a dining hall where you can have your meals. There is different housing for the porters and the other members of your team.

Location

The Horombo campsite is on the southern side of the Kilimanjaro. It’s on between the ridges of Mawenzi. Mawenzi is the third highest peak of the Kilimanjaro.

The camp is at the borderline of the Moorland vegetation and the Alpine vegetation. This means it share both characteristics of both regions. It can be both wet and dry in no time.

It can also be too cold and too hot in a space of few minutes. This is the reason why the trail to this route can be both muddy, slippery and yet rocky.

There is a zebra walk adjacent to the Horombo huts camp. This zebra actually has Zebra rocks and not actual live zebras. You have a chance to see these rocks as you stay at this camp.

When you move from the moorland to the Alpine, the oxygen levels drop significantly.

At this camp site, you have a chance to familiarize with the Alpine region.

The below this one on the Marangu trail is the Mandara huts camp and the next one is the Kibo huts.
