Karanga Valley – A Crucial Rest Stop on Kilimanjaro’s Southern Circuit

The hike to the Karanga valley is supposed to be a shorter one. Usually it takes about six hours. The valley is at an altitude of about 4,100 meters above sea level.

While at the Karanga camp you also have chance to explore the Karanga Valley as well. The Barranco wall is also in a distance. To reach the camp you will have to climb the Barranco wall. The routes that use the Shira, Umbwe, Lemosho and Umbwe trail as they hike to the summit of the Kilimanjaro.

Karanga Camp

The Karanga hut camp derives its names from the Karanga Valley. The camp is used but hikers that use the Shira, Umbwe, Lemosho and Umbwe trails as they hike to the summit of the Kilimanjaro.

This camp is more like a resting point and a re-energizing point for some itineraries. Some itineraries however use this as an overnight point. The camp before is Barranco huts camp and the one ahead is Barafu hut camp.

There are no cabins or huts here and you will have to carry your own tent that you will pitch at a place of your comfort. There are no toilets here and you be expected to use the pit latrine. The ranger’s place that also doubles as the administrative offices.

Location

The camp is located at the edge of the Karanga Valley. This is in the southern part of the Kibo Cone. It is at the edge of the moorland vegetation zone of the Kilimanjaro.

While hiking to the Kilimanjaro via the Karanga Camp, you will also go through the Karanga valley.

The camp is surrounded by vegetation and it receives a good amount of rain fall. The area is however a little humid. The camp is near the Barafu huts camp.

Distance from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The camp is at an elevation of about 3,963 meters above sea level. It’s about 2 miles from the Barafu huts camp. The hike form the Karanga to Barafu campsite is about 3 hours.

It’s from Barafu that you will finally reach the Kilimanjaro summit. The camping lies in the valley of Karanga and this gives its access to water from the streams in the valley.
