Londorossi Gate – The Western Entrance to Kilimanjaro’s Remote Routes

The Londorossi Gate is located on the northern part of the base of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. This is a busy area as it is the administrative gate for the Shira and Lemosho routes.

The area is an open field with several offices of the park authority. It’s called a gate but it’s more like an administrative area.

When all the registration formalities are done, you will drive to the starting point of either the Lemosho or Shira trails.

The area around the Londorossi gate receives a lot rainfall levels due to the fact that it is at the bottom of a montane forest.

Registration and inspection procedures may include:-

  • Passport / Visa verification
  • Cross-checking to prove if your mountain guide belongs to a registered tour company

If you do not fulfill any of the above requirements, you will be denied entry.

Moshi to Londorossi gate

Moshi is usually the nearest point to the Kilimanjaro among the major towns as it is about 42 Kilometers from the Kilimanjaro National Park.

The Londorossi gate is about 80 Kilometers from the ton of Moshi. It’s about one hour and 40 minutes to two hours. The drive is a bit smooth since there traffic is majorly that, that heads to the park.

Location

The park is about 25 miles from the border with Kenya. The park is about 42 kilometers from the major town of Moshi. It’s an open field that is just a few meters form the montane forests of the Kilimanjaro.

How to get there

Since there is a lot of rain in this area, the roads are a little slick, and this situation only becomes worse during the lengthy wet season, which lasts from March to mid-June.

It is recommended that you take a 4X4 vehicle. The majority of the rod is paved, but there are several spots, particularly at the gate leading to any of the trails, that are murram and occasionally inaccessible.

You are also advised to visit this area usually in the dry season; this however doesn’t mean that it will not rain during this time. It can rain any time of the year.
