This is one of the entry points to the Kilimanjaro. It’s also the beginning of the Marangu trail. This gate is also used as an exit gate.
It is important to note that some gates are only used to ascend like the Machame gate. Most people that hike through the Rongai and Marangu its self will exit through this gate.
This gate is the largest and busiest of all the entry points of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. It’s also probably the most popular gate on this mountain.
Gate Facilities
This gate has shop with hiking equipment. Therefore you don’t have you worry in case you forget or lose some of your equipment. There are several restaurants, consumer good shops, Kilimanjaro travel company offices and government offices.
The majority of the park authorities’ departments are housed in these sizable park offices. You may sort through all of your paperwork while in the park.
Registration and inspection procedures may include:-
- Verification of Mount Kilimanjaro entry fees
- Passport / Visa verification
- Cross-checking to prove if your mountain guide belongs to a registered tour company
- Make sure you have enough resources to support your climb and stay on the mountain such as porters, tents, food, and water
- Cross-checking itinerary for every day spent on Mount Kilimanjaro
You will not be allowed entrance if any of the aforementioned conditions are not met.
This is where you will meet your porters and the rest of your crew. Parking is free and there’s sufficient security for any belongings and equipment left behind.
Other features
A bathing area and a water fall are formed by streams that flow from the Kilimanjaro itself. You can decide whether to unwind before or after your trek. The distance between the gate headquarters and the falls is roughly thirty minutes.
Location
This gate is located in the south eastern side of the Kilimanjaro in the Marangu district. It is approximately about a two hours drive form the town of Moshi. Moshi is about 42 Kilometers from the Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Vegetation Zone
Most gates to the Kilimanjaro National Park are located at the base of the mountain and therefore they are all at the edge of the Montane forest zone vegetation of the mountain.
This area is characterized by a lot of trees that form a canopy at the top since it’s a tropical rain forest. This makes the place a bit cooler since the sun rays cannot hit directly.
