Visit Materuni Village & Waterfalls – A Cultural and Natural Retreat Near Kilimanjaro

Like most villages around the Kilimanjaro Mountain, the Materuni Village is also a small village with a lot of coffee and Banana plantations.

You will visit this village to have an insight of the life of the normal Chagga community.

What is Materuni waterfall & village?

Situated approximately 1300 meters above sea level lies the village. From Moshi, it takes around 45 minutes to reach Materuni Village via road.

The climb to the Materuni waterfalls is one of the main attractions. This is a busy village that is most likely one of the most frequented in the region.

Since Moshi is located roughly 800 meters above sea level, going to the Materuni settlements requires a change in elevation.

Materuni waterfall hike

It is recommended that you begin your hike at approximately 9 a.m. to allow ample time for exploration and return to Moshi or Arusha on schedule.

To schedule your tour, basically stop by the village office. Everything from this point onwards is handled by the locals, including transportation.

This is where you’ll leave your car. It might be better to start with the 45-minute walk to the waterfall from the office, as it is an exhilarating and potentially more energy-demanding hike that will definitely get your day started.

If you are not well enough to walk, you can ride a motorcycle. You’ll need fifteen minutes to ride the motorcycle.

Materuni village: coffee experience & Chagga lunch

You will go to the coffee plantation after the waterfall, where you will be shown through every step of the coffee-making process, from bean selection to drying, roasting, and grinding, until the coffee is ready to drink.

You should drink the native beer that is made here from bananas, which is also made by the locals. There are groups in this neighborhood who plan the Chagga lunch event.

You will be shown some of the greatest Chagga dishes, and you can sample any that you feel comfortable eating for lunch. While you have lunch or later, you can enjoy traditional Chagga tunes performed by local singing and dancing groups.

How much does it cost to visit Materuni waterfall?

There are no posts to direct you to the Materuni Falls, therefore you will need a guide to get there. For this excursion, a guide will charge roughly $25 per day from the village office. It’s crucial that you give them a tip afterward.
