The Moir Hut is located at an elevation of about 4161 meters above sea level. The camp is a very old and out of shape hut camp. The wooden hut camp is located on the famous Shira Plateau on the Kilimanjaro Mountain.
The huts here are shaped like pyramids.
The camp here was among the first camps since the inception of the hiking trails of the Kilimanjaro but it’s worn out and no longer in use.
The camp used to be a good scenic place overlooking the valleys that surround the steep slopes of the Kilimanjaro. It’s in the surroundings of lent hills on the Kilimanjaro that are used to acclimatize for the Kilimanjaro especially for hikers on the Lemosho trail.
Location of The Moir Hut
The hut is just a few meters from the preset day Moir’s hut campsite that is on the volcanic ridge in the north eastern side of the Kilimanjaro Mountain.
You will meet this hut if you take any of the northern routes to hike the Kilimanjaro.
These routes include Machame route, Shira and Lemosho. The northern circuit route is however the only route that directly goes through the path of this hut.
The vegetation around this area is the alpine vegetation. This zone is an arid region.
This area has barely any vegetation in this area. Make sure you have all the measures to protect you from the sun rays as they are very strong here and you have nothing to protect you at all.
The temperature is really high here and it can reach up to about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Here if you haven’t acclimatized ell you will definitely have the altitude sickness and they use the rule of “climb high, sleep low” to control the effect of the illness.
There are a few plants that survive here like the tussock grass, some moss varieties and everlastings. The conditions are really too hard for any animal life to survive.
Moir Camp for Lemosho Route Acclimatization
If you take an 8 day trek to the Kilimanjaro via the lemosho trail. The Moir camp is the best camp along this trail. Its one of the places where you can have a hot lunch. This camp will also help you acclimatize for the northern route trails.
