Meet Anne Lorimor – The Oldest Person to Summit Mount Kilimanjaro

The Hike to the top for the Kilimanjaro is now for everyone and it doesn’t discriminate against age or sex. The Oldest person to hike to the summit of the Kilimanjaro is a record that has been broken by many people over time.

We take look at the most recent records of the oldest people to reach the summit.

Anne Lorimor (89 years old) – 12 July 2019

Lorimor became the oldest person to reach the summit in July 2019. She reached the top at the age of 89.

She was a grand Mother from the area of Arizona in The United states of America.

Anne has reached the summit before in the year 2015 while she was 85 years old but this only made her the oldest woman to reach the top of the Kilimanjaro.

She only held the record foot a few months as in the month of October the same year, another lady aged 86 and 267 days, Angela Vorobeva became the old person not just a woman to hike and reach the top of the Kilimanjaro.

In 2017 however, Dr. Fred Distelhorst who was 87 years of age also broke the same record and became the oldest person to hike the Kilimanjaro.

Lorimor then sets sights to hike the Kilimanjaro again. In 2019, she left Arizona for Tanzania and then the Kilimanjaro.

She successfully reached the summit on the 18th of July 2019 and became the oldest person to reach the summit of the Kilimanjaro at the age 89.

She managed to go through with this hike even with the pain in the side that she had suffered from the fall prior to the hike.

Angela Vorobeva (86 years old) – 29 October 2015

She was of Russian origin and she was born on February 4th 1929.

Angela reached the summit of the Kilimanjaro in October 29th 2015 breaking the record that had been earlier set by Lorimor which she had set in July of the same year.

She reached the summit at the age of 86 years and 267 days. She and her team spent another hour at the summit to celebrate this mile stone.

Angela mentioned that she was doing the hike for both her and her sister who had died of Pneumonia.

She actually reached the summit on her late sister’s birthday and that’s why this trek was really important and memorable to her.

She received formal recognition for the Guinness world record for the mile stone.

Dr. Robert J. Wheeler (85 years old) – 2 October 2014

Among the most recent hikers, Dr Robert J Wheeler is in the third spot and reached this record at the age of 85 years and 201 days.

He reached the summit on October 2nd 2014. He was also formally recognized by the Guinness world records.  Wheeler was in the company of his son and they hiked for about three days to reach the summit.

He had previously hiked Mountain Aconcangua in Argentina and Mountain Fuji in Japan which are also the highest in their respective continents.

Wheeler comes from Missouri and he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the army and later a Professor of Psychology at the University of Saint Louis. He was a father of three.
