The Shira camp is found at an elevation of about 3,510 meters above sea level and it along the Lemosho route. You can use this camp as resting spot or an overnight accommodation area.
When climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the camp might be utilized. On the second day of your journey, you will arrive at this camp in the afternoon. This is not a permanent housing complex with huts and cottages.
You will be required to carry your tent that you can pitch the camping area. The camp has just one semi permanent structure that is the ranger’s hut and also cats as the administrative offices here.
Shira 1 campsite Toilets
There are no restrooms at this campsite. It only has wood-made, semi-permanent pit latrines that are safe to use while visiting. Your bathrooms will be sufficiently clean for you to use even without a shower.
Location of Shira Camp One
The camp is located on the famous Shira Plateau on the western side of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. There are three other camps near this camp that bear a similar name. That is the Shira 2 Campsite, and Shira cave campsite.
The Shira Plateau
This area basically stretches for about 13km and is west of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. Approximately 3,800 meters above sea level, it is one of the highest plateaus in the world.
It is estimated that this plateau originated roughly 500,000 years ago.
The base of a volcanic pit is thought to have been a caldera that gradually eroded to build a plateau.
Why hike the Shira Plateau route
There are two main reasons why you should not trek this trail unless you are an experienced hiker. For novices, the route’s starting elevation of roughly 3600 meters above sea level is challenging.
This basically will not give you enough time to make your body used to the high altitude and you may get sick.
Furthermore, you are unable to enjoy these breathtaking views because this path does not pass through the Kilimanjaro Mountains’ western woods.
