Third Cave Camp on Kilimanjaro – A Secluded Stop on the Rongai Route

The Third Cave Camp (Campsite) of Mount Kilimanjaro is located at an elevation of about 3930 meters above sea level. It’s located near the old Kilimanjaro cave.

Similar to other of the original campgrounds on this mountain, the park officials closed the third cave camp site, and for safety reasons, it is no longer in use.

The majority of uses for the camp are as places to stay overnight.

Like most camps on the Rongai route, the Camp has less traffic as a result of the less people that use this route. It is a less popular route amongst hikes since its far way on the Kenya Tanzania border.

It is the sixth camp you meet on this route like the name suggests you also have an option to instead use the Mawenzi Tarn camp as it gives a shorter option to reach the summit.

If you choose to take the Northern circuit route which is actually very long compared to the Rongai trail, the third cave camp is the sixth camp you will meet on your hide. It’s above the Pofu campsite.

The camp has no structures lest for the semi permanent building that houses the ranger’s hut which also works as the administration offices of this camp.

There are no cabins or huts. You will have to carry your own camping gear that you will pitch at your favorable spot in the camping area.

The camp also has scarcity of water and your team will have to either carry water or find some from the nearby camp.

Location of Third Cave campsite

The camp is located on the boundaries of the Alpine and Moorland vegetation zones of the Kilimanjaro. The Alpine region has lot temperature variations during the days and night.

There won’t be much vegetation on this portion of the mountain. There are few yellow daisies in a really bleak landscape. However, Kilimanjaro’s Moorland vegetation zone is different. Numerous Lobelias, enormous goundsel, vibrant red pokers, and Scenarios trees will be visible.

Rainfall primarily falls on this part of the mountain through the mist that typically obscures the landscape. Naturally, the temperature will be below zero here.

This camp will therefore share little bit of both vegetation zone characteristics. This makes the camp a good place to acclimatize. You will soon be joining the Alpine zone that is a bit hard for the human life.
