Kikekelwa Campsite – A Serene Stop on Kilimanjaro’s Northern Circuit

This campsite is located on the Rongai route of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. This camp is the third that you will meet on you hike using this route. The Kikelelwa campsite is used as an overnight accommodation space on this route.

You will reach this camp if you hike from the base of the Mawenzi cone of the Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation on Kikekelwa Campsite

The Kikekelwa Campsite has no permanent structure and you will not expect to find cabins or huts. There is one semi permanent structure which is the ranger’s hut buts also doubles as the administration office of the camp.

You will be expected to carry your own camping gear which you will pitch at the available camping spot of your choice. The camp is public and open to any hikers.

Like all the other camps, you have to carry your own food and other personal necessities.

There is limited water supply on this camp therefore there are no toilets on this camp. You will use the pit latrine available. They are clean and safe.

Location of Kikelelwa Campsite

The Camp is located along the Moorland vegetation zone of the Kilimanjaro which is between an altitude of 2,800 meters above sea level and 4,000 meters above sea level.

After you have gone through the forest, you will meet the heath and moorland vegetation zone. This is made up of giant heathers and Tall grass.

This will however expose you to more winds unlike the previous section.

This zone has hot temperatures during the day with very low temperature at night.

Since the area receives more sunshine, the tails here are a bit more dry compared to the forested zone. The sun rays are stronger since there is no canopy cover.

You will be heading to the Mawenzi tarn camp site after  you leave the  Kikelelwa Campsite and the camp before this one is Second cave campsite.
