The proximity of the camp to the Tarn at the Mawenzi on Kilimanjaro Mountain gave rise to its name. This camp is situated at the foot of Mawenzi, the second-highest summit on Kilimanjaro, a volcanic mountain.
The term “camp” is rarely used and is not widely used among Kilimanjaro trekkers.
Hikers who use the Rongei Trail to ascend Kilimanjaro Mountain frequently stay at this camp. In actuality, the camp is tiny.
Location of Mawenzi Tarn campsite
Situated at the foot of the Mawenzi peaks, the camp is one of the few that is close to the Tarn on this summit.
The camp is positioned to benefit hikers who are prepared to use the Mawenzi peak to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
It is situated in the Kilimanjaro’s Alpine vegetation zone because it is the final camp before reaching the summit.
There is hardly much rainfall in this humid area. It does, however, receive some snow, albeit seldom. Since no plant or animal can withstand these extreme circumstances, the area is devoid of life.
There are no insects or mosquitoes to worry about here.
The place is however rocky and filled with small rocked referred to as scree and this may make it hard to find where to pitch your tent more so when the place is full to capacity.
Mawenzi Tarn Campsite & Toilets
You will be required to bring your own camping equipment, which you will set up at the approved camping location, as there are no permanent buildings in the form of cabins or cottages here.
This area has just one semi-permanent building, the ranger’s hut, which doubles as the administration building. Pit latrines are used here instead of toilets. Although you must share with other hikers, they are tidy and safe.
In contrast to other high-altitude camping sites such as the Mawenzi Tarn Camp. You won’t have to worry about water availability at this camp.
There is a water source that comes from the Mawenzi Tarn; however this water is not safe for drinking. Therefore, make sure to carry your drinking water all the way through.
Mawenzi Tarn Campsite to Kibo Hut Camp
There is about 8 Kilometer between the Mawezi tarn Camp and the Kibo hut camp. Mawezi Tarn camp stands at an elevation of about 4,310 meters above sea level. The Kibo huts camp is at an elevation of about 4,700 meters above sea level.
