This gate is known as The Rongai or Nalemuru or Nalemoru Gate. It’s located on the north Eastern part of the base of the Kilimanjaro Mountain and it’s also close to the Tanzania-Kenya boarder.
It is the starting point for hiker using the Rongai trail to the highest peak of Kibo or Uhuru.
The Rongai gate has administrative offices of the park that monitor and offer all the services related to hiking including registration.
Rongai is also a remote area gate and is rarely used by hikers and therefore has low traffic. It’s far from most of the other attractions and that’s why it’s not a favorable hiking route.
It’s almost three hours from the major town of Moshi. Although the road here is tarmacked, the drive is really long.
The roads as you approach the gate are murram. The river however gives stunning views as you go through plantations of Bananas and coffee.
You will also encounter Lake Chala.

Location
Situated closer on the Tanzanian side of the border, the Rongai gate is a remote location close to the Kenyan border. The gate is located in Mount Kilimanjaro’s northeastern foothills.
The northern portion of this land is covered in tree plantings as a result of government afforestation initiatives for Rongai.
The closest town to Rongai is situated near the Kenyan border in the northeast.
The area around the Rongai gate or Nalemuru/Nalemoru gate is a water catchment area, with streams flowing from the slopes of Kilimanjaro, one significant stream flows close to the Rongai gate and you get to cross it as you head up the mountain towards Simba Camp, which is the first campsite you encounter.
Vegetation
This gate is basically in between two Kilimanjaro vegetation zones. The gate is at almost 2000 meters above sea level and this puts it’s been the montane forest and the heath zone.
This area is home to a lot of game that is in the Kilimanjaro National Park. This gate is not favorable as well due to the level at which one begins the hike which sometimes makes it hard to acclimatize.
Moshi to Rongai Gate
It takes almost three hours to drive from Moshi to the Rongai gate. There is roughly 95 kilometers between them. Up to a certain distance from the gate, the road is well-tarmacked.
